The Tower
of St. Peter, of the Hellenistic period (4th-3rd century BC), is one of the
best preserved in the Cyclades. It Is cylindrical and is preserved to a height
of about 20 m. The base diameter is 9.40 meters and is constructed entirely
from local slate. Inside there is a spiral staircase leading to at least five
floors. The tower is built in a very privileged position, as is located on the
plain of Gavrio and is facing the sea to control the chips. Also around the
monument there are mines of metal (copper), which functioned until the
beginning of the century, there are indications that similar operations were in
ancient times. Obviously the role of the monument was to control land and sea.
